No Menu After Game Launch

I may be completely stupid, but I have purchased the game through Steam and it seems to load fine. I see an animation of space and the word Loading at the bottom of the screen.

Pretty quickly the Loading notification goes away and I have a cursor, but no Menu or options.

I have no sound, but the animation continues to play without a problem as eventually I see a planet, etc...

Any clue what needs to be done?

i had that problem running windows 7, i launched it from the actual .exe file and it worked, but it will give me that error if i use ANY shortcut to the game

I have the same problem on my Vista desktop, though it runs fine on my XP laptop. Any solutions?

I have the same issue after buying through Steam.
And launching through doesn't change it at all.

I also bought through Steam, and also had the same issue. However, rebooting my PC somehow fixed it.
