If I try to start the pc demo with my emu1212 sound card set as the default sound card the game crashes immediately after showing the click to continue screen. Switching my default sound card to an old turtle beach sound card (I have both installed) and it loads perfectly.

Not too big of an issue (I've had the sound not work in another game due to this sound card, didn't cause crashing though).

Using windows xp sp2 and have the latest sound card drivers installed.

Does that EMU 1212 switch automatically from 24bit to 16bit?
If not try setting it to 16bit / 441.khz manually and see if that works.

Either that or it doesn't work with OpenAL.

Well just out of curiosity I decided to test a few other OpenAL games. Sound didn't work in one, slowed one game down to unplayable, and failed when using the "native driver" in the other. So it appears likely that the EMU 1212 isn't supported very well by OpenAL.

As for the card settings, it's at 44.1khz and I have no idea about the 16/24 bits issue since it doesn't seem to say it anywhere.

But like I said, not too big of an issue to me since I've got two sound cards.

Just curious... have you updated your drivers for the EMU1212 to the latest ones?

Sounds like you probably have, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Usually this sort of problem is caused by old OpenAL drivers for your card (or bugs in the card's OpenAL drivers).
If the card didn't support OpenAL at all, it would just fall back to software/DirectSound and work fine.

Yeah, I just checked and I've got the latest drivers. Doesn't seem like they've actually released any new drivers in over a year.
